Snow Day

By: WH Angel

The child looked outside.  All she saw was white.  White ground.  White trees.  Even her daddy’s car was white!

“SNOW DAY!” her twin went screaming down the all.  She chased after him, giggling.

Their mother was in the kitchen.  She smiled as they entered.  The television was on in the background, confirming what the boy had said.

“We’ve gotten three feet of snow since last night,” the announcer said.  “All schools in the area are closed.  We are advising that if you don’t have to go into work, then stay home.  The roads are icy.”

“Mom!  Can we go outside and play?”

“Yes, darling, but first you need to eat breakfast and then bundle up,” she replied smiling.  She remembered her first snow day.  She had gone sledding with her dad.  Afterwards, they had built a snowman and made snow angels.  She wanted her children to have the same fond memories.

The children ate their maple-flavored oatmeal for breakfast.  Then they trucked upstairs to put on their snow clothes and boots, pink for her and blue for him.  Then they raced downstairs.  Their mother was waiting at the door with a couple of sleds.  The kids ran up to her.

“Cool!”  they exclaimed in unison while they examined their sleds.  They were both red with brown rope as a handle.

“Are you two ready to go out?” their mother asked while opening the door.

“Yea!” they yelled as they raced out the door.  They stopped dead in their tracks on the porch and looked out on the lawn with wonder.

It was amazing!  Just yesterday the ground had been green and the trees brown.  Overnight, a thick layer of white had covered everything.  It was a winter wonderland!

The little boy tentatively put his foot out on the first step.  He was the more adventuresome of the two.  His foot went through the snow and he squealed with delight.  His sister, seeing the joy he was having, decided to join him.

Their squeals of laughter and joy echoed across the lawn beckoning others to come and join in the fun.
